PentruMoldova.md : Moldova abandons dollar for euro

Must Read

Moldova is implementing a revolutionary change in its currency policy. As of January 2, the euro has become the reference currency for setting the official exchange rate of the Moldovan leu, replacing the previously used US dollar. The decision was announced by President Maia Sandu, who emphasized that this step strengthens economic ties with the European Union, bringing stability and predictability.

The National Bank of Moldova notes that the change is due to the growing importance of the euro in trade transactions (over 60%) and money transfers (70%). The introduction of the euro as a reference currency is intended to reduce exchange rate fluctuations and differences between purchase and sale rates, which will translate into lower currency exchange costs and benefits for the economy.

This is another step by Moldova towards integration with the EU financial market. The country is actively seeking to join the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA), having submitted an official application last year.
